FUT Hair Transplant

 
The FUT was the first technique used for hair transplant. It consists of removing a strip (a piece of skin) from the donor area and cutting it to get follicular grafts.

The donor strip is removed from the top of the neck and consists of a strip of hair, which will be meticulously cut under microscope.

The scar is approximately 1mm wide and invisible because it is covered by hair. In the case of multiple hair transplants, the new strip is extracted next to the old scar, in order to limit damage to the skin and to leave only one scar.

To facilitate the cutting of the grafts, the strip is subdivided into slivers using a microscope. These slivers are composed of only one row of follicles which are then subdivided into follicular unit grafts.

Each sliver is subdivided into several tiny grafts, which are each individually sculpted.
The grafts are isolated in order to respect the number of hairs that they contain. They are then ordered according to the number of hairs before being chilled and placed in a saline solution.

Grafts are implanted in the little incisions or recipient sites on the scalp surface with the help of a specific micro lancet. All the incisions are made according to topography and are properly angled to give the implant a very discreet and natural aspect.

The width of the incisions is adapted to the size of the grafts. Generally, there are three different types of incisions. The small incisions, or the most anterior ones, receive one-hair grafts. The medium-sized incisions receive two-hair grafts, whereas the larger incisions receive the three or four-hair grafts. All the incisions are made personally by Dr Devroye, Dr Montesanti and Dr Jenard.

Each graft is implanted manually. It is very important to handle the grafts very carefully in order to avoid damaging them.

As a result, grafts will quickly find themselves in an environment which contributes to their development. They will rapidly settle in the skin, and the day after surgery you will be already able to touch them, without having to worry about whether they will fall out.

The patient does not require any bandages.

Hair will start to grow within days following surgery. Generally speaking, some grafts will fall out from the tenth day after surgery.

Hair that falls out does so with the bulb attached, which disturbs patients a great deal. There is no need for panic though as the original cell, which will provide the new hair, always remains in the scalp and will ensure growth within two or three months.
